Visit From OC Wing

1414 had a very busy first parade night of 2024, starting off the year with a visit from OC Sussex Wing, Wing Commander Hélène Gould!

There were a couple of activities running in the first half of the evening to showcase some of the great training opportunities we provide on squadron and how we are modernising our training programme.

One activity was a Map Exercise integrating technology, What3Words, into map reading. Cadets used the app alongside a physical map to pinpoint locations, plan routes and work out distances, timings and other factors, all skills that are useful within DofE and orienteering.

The second activity was based on STEM, led by CI Loft. Cadets had to construct paper aeroplanes that would be attached to a motor and flown, attempting to make the most successful design. This allowed them to learn about the aerodynamics and forces that are exerted on an aircraft, the basic principles of flight, a key part of cadet classification training.

Finally, in the second half of the evening, Wing Commander Gould handed out a variety of awards for achievements over 2023. These included 1414's Best Junior Cadet, Best Newcomer, Most Improved Cadet, Cadet of the Year and Flight of the Year. One of the most notable achievements was CI Fenton's Wing Commander's Commendation for the incredible work that he does as our squadron adjutant, a role that required great commitment and dedication throughout the entirety of last year.
