1414 Cadets at Airshows

Over the course of this weekend, cadets from 1414 squadron have been helping out at two different airshows; Biggin Hill Festival of Flight and Airborne: Eastbourne International Airshow. Cadets spoke with members of the public about some of the incredible opportunities provided by RAFAC, and some were lucky enough to go airside beyond the crowdline to look at some display aircraft!

1414 Squadron selected as Mayor's Charity

The sqn is pleased to announce that we have, along with Ditch the Slippers, been selected as the Mayor's charity for this year. Proceeds from the November 5th fireworks and other charity events will be shared equally between the two charities. The sqn is very proud to have been recognised for the work we do for and with young people in Crowborough.

Horseguards Visit

Cadets from 1414 joined cadets from 1343 (East Grinstead) Sqn on Tuesday to visit Hyde Park Barracks and Horseguards.
They all had an amazing day learning about the uniforms, the saddles and horse shoes not to mention the history of the Blues and Royals armour. Cadets had a great time feeding the horses (getting dribbled on) and enjoyed the PT session. 1414 Sqn are grateful to the staff from 1343 who organised the trip and of course to the Horseguards themselves.

Dining In Night

On Saturday the sqn held its annual dinner when 25 cadets, staff and civilian committee members were joined by family, friends, supporters and our sqn President Nusrat Ghani MP. Cpl Jack Cowan received the Cadet's Cadet award and a raffle and auction raised a large sum of money for new equipment for cadet training. A good time was had by all and the sqn is very grateful for all the support on the night.

Lees Trophy Inspection

After being selected as the best squadron with under 45 cadets in the entirety of Sussex, on the evening of April 1, London and South East Region (LaSER) Commandant, Group Captain Al Lewis, visited the squadron as part of the process of the Lees Trophy competition. Throughout the evening, the cadets showcased a wide variety of the activities that they complete, ranging from first aid to soldering, the flight simulator and the kit car, even letting him test both! Later in the evening, some cadets also talked through a self-created presentation to the rest of the squadron and the Regional Commandant, speaking about all of the incredible opportunities that set our squadron apart from others and the fantastic camps that they have attended, before the evening ended with a number of awards being presented on final parade.

'Hell's Belle' Memorial Ceremony

The squadron were very proud to be a part of the unveiling of this memorial yesterday, alongside the Deputy Lord Lieutenant of East Sussex, the Deputy Air Attaché for the US Air Force at the US Embassy in London, and the Mayor, to commemorate 75 years since the crash of a US B-26 Marauder bomber in this location, with the tragic loss of all six crew members, who skilfully avoided causing any civilian casualties.

Lord Lieutenant's Awards Ceremony

Last night CWO Georgia Allison and Civilian Instructor (CI) Sue Hobbs were honoured to attend the Lord Lieutenant's Awards Ceremony at Christ's Hospital School in Horsham. Georgia received the Pearson BTEC Achievement Award 2018 and CI Hobbs received a Lord Lieutenant's Award for Meritorious Service. They were both lucky enough to be accompanied by their parents and OC Sqn WO Mark Hobbs. CI Hobbs said after the event that 'It was incredibly lovely and humbling to be honoured for all the work that I have done for the sqn and the cadets of Sussex Wing over the last ten years'.

Presentation Evening

Monday 8th October saw the annual Presentation Evening at the sqn. The awards can be found through the link below.
The evening was attended by the Mayor of Crowborough, Councillor Greg Rose, members of the Royal British Legion and the Lions club, families and friends of the squadron.
Before the awards ceremony they were treated to displays of first aid, simulated flight and got to look around some of the new equipment.

Poppy Appeal Box Filling

Tonight, the squadron was busy with an evening of filling Poppy Boxes for the 2018 Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal. There were some old favourite items that went into the boxes, as well as some exciting new ones. In early November, cadets will be out selling poppies to fundraise for the Poppy Appeal.

1414 at 2018 Crowborough Carnival

Last night the sqn split in two with a small group of cadets attending the Wing Swimming Gala and achieving third place while another group took part in Crowborough Carnival and taking 2nd place in the walking tableaux category. As always the staff are incredibly proud of the efforts of all the cadets who represented the sqn so well.

Dieppe Raid Parade in Newhaven

Today cadets from 1414, 2262, 304, 88 & 54 sqns ( East Sector) took part in a parade in Newhaven to commemorate the Dieppe Raids, now 76 years ago. They joined representatives, including the Mayor of Dieppe, French families, Brigadier General Lowell Thomas on behalf of the Canadian High Commissioner, Deputy Lieutenant Colonel David Stevens OBE on behalf of Her Majesty the Queen, the Mayor of Newhaven and other dignitaries to remember British, Canadian and American servicemen who died during Operation Jubilee.
